Madsen 11th at Nationals as Team Now Heads West
PETERSEN MEDIA- Heading into the biggest race of the year, the Knoxville Nationals, Ian Madsen and his KCP Racing team rode in a nice waive of momentum has a trio of Top-10’s at both Ironman events and the Front Row Challenge helped spring board them to a sixth place finish during their Wednesday night qualifier and ultimately 11th in the Nationals finale as they now make their way west for one final time in 2018.
“It’s a grueling week in every aspect of it,” Ian Madsen said. “From everything that goes on, racing is almost the relaxing part of the week and that is still high stress because everything always seems to fall back to how the Nationals went when the season ends, and for us our Nationals went pretty well.”
Heading into Wednesday night’s qualifier, Madsen used his experience as a two-time track champion to time the Logan Contractors Supply, Inc./Aspen Aire/Royal Flooring machine in fifth quickest in time trials.
In a torrid battle in heat race action with James McFadden, Kyle Larson, and Willie Croft for the final transfer position directly into the feature event, Madsen would come up short and be forced into the Last Chance Showdown.
Running second in the ‘B’, Madsen would grid the field from the 22nd starting position in the 25-lap feature event with some work to do to lock into Saturday night’s finale.
On the famed ½ mile, Madsen would be extremely impressive as he worked his way forward meticulously. Slicing and dicing his way through the field, the St. Marys, NSW native would make up a ton of ground as he took the checkered flag with a sixth place finish and looked to be well inside Saturday’s ‘A’ Main but still had to wait and see how Thursday shook out.
When Thursday came to a close, Madsen sat 11th in points and was in fact in the 50-lap feature event and would take Doug Clark’s green flag from the 11th starting position.
Working his way forward in the opening stanza of the feature, Madsen would be in the eighth position when the halfway stop came about. Deemed that his crew worked on his entry beyond the allotted time, Madsen would have to forfeit two positions and would restart the race from 10th.
Continuing to run well in the sport’s biggest spectacle, Madsen would continue run well inside the Top-10 as the laps clicked off. Late in the race, Madsen would make contact with the wall that would get him a little out of shape but he would be able to race out of trouble. Losing a few positions, Madsen would fall back to 11th where he would go on to close out the 58th Annual Knoxville Nationals.
“We were solid all week long,” Madsen said. “It was great to get back in Iowa with so many partners of ours there and catch up. It’s a daunting week, we are all whooped, but the show goes on and we are looking forward to North Dakota this weekend.”
Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Kline Electric, Ted’s Body Shop, Team Excavating, Greenland Homes, Finer Cuts Lawn and Landscape, American Express, TammyHeckart.com, Quality Traffic Control, BergenKDV, Coverage Direct, Revolution Race Gear, Monarch’s, and BK Racing Titanium for their support this season.
