PETERSEN MEDIA- Though the results didn’t quite stack up in Florida as Ian Madsen and KCP Racing hoped, the St. Marys, NSW driver is eager to continue to his first full season on the World of Outlaw Craftsman Sprint Car Series trail as the series now heads west.
“We had a really fast car in Florida, but unfortunately things just didn’t go our way,” Madsen said. “In Ocala, FL we were in the lead pack and contact got us upside down, and during the WoO opener we were really good, but I made a mistake and bounced through a rut and that also knocked us out of contention.”
After crashing in Ocala, FL back on February eighth, Madsen and company then decided to turn their attention to this past week’s DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.
Recording 16th and 13th place finishes with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on Wednesday and Thursday to open a five night speedway in Barberville, FL, Madsen and KCP Racing came out swinging during the World of Outlaws season opener as Madsen timed the Logan Contractors Supply Inc./Aspen Aire/Royal Flooring entry in fifth quickest in time trials.
Finishing second in his heat race, the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender would move into the Dash where a second place finish put him on the front row of the 30-lap feature event.
When the green flag waived, Madsen settled into second as he chased after Paul McMahan who jumped out to the early lead. In the race’s opening laps, Madsen would keep the race leader in his crosshairs until the reached the back of the pack.
Erasing McMahan’s gap as they got into traffic, Madsen would challenge for the top spot until a caution flag impeded his progress. Feeling pressure from Sheldon Haudenschild as the action resumed, Madsen was able to fend him off, but McMahan was able to get away.
As the laps clicked on, Madsen continued to run in the second spot until he hooked a rut on the race’s 26th lap and his car shot up the track making contact with the wall and ultimately brought his night to an early end.
Having some struggles on Saturday night, Madsen’s night would start off rough as he timed in 28th quickest in time trials, and was unable to recover as he would end up finishing fifth in the semi and not making the feature event.
Sunday night’s finale saw Madsen time the Bobcat/Kline Electric/Ted’s Body Shop entry in 17th fastest before earning a fifth place finish in his heat race and transferring directly into the feature event.
Lining up 14th, Madsen would battle with the likes of older brother, Kerry, and Joey Saldana as they jockeyed for position on the half-mile.
When the checkered flag was displayed to the field, Madsen would close his Florida trip out with a 14th place finish.
“It was a frustrating trip at times, but I have the utmost confidence in my guys,” Ian Madsen said. “We will take advantage of some ship time before we get ready to head West.”
Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Logan Contractors Supply Inc., Aspen Aire, Royal Flooring, Bobcat, Team Kline Electric, Ted’s Body Shop, Bobcat, Team Excavating, Greenland Homes, Finer Cuts Lawn and Landscape, American Express, TammyHeckart.com, Quality Traffic Control, Bergen Paulsen, Coverage Direct, Revolution Race Gear, Monarch’s, and BK Racing Titanium for their support this season.
